Would it be possible to live without the designer coffee, the Kate Spade bags, the technology that were a part of my everyday existence? Could stripping away some of those items and habits make me aooreciate what I have? I created a plan. Each month for one year, I would choose one of my favorite things and give it up,cold turkey, for one month. This would become my year to live with less...

January...----Alcohol...

When I woke up with flannel on my teeth, a tribal pounding in my head, and a feeling of mental queasiness that could only be remedied by a Denny's breakfast, I uttered those famous last words," I am never drinking again," followed by those other famous words," I mean it."

Even though at that moment I was in no position to make clear decisions, I needed to regain control of my life or at least my ability to stand up without the room spinning. Push had come to shove and I was ready to strike a de… Continue

My year to live better with less...Dec....---Multitasking

Like most people. I was stressed out, overscheduled, and tripping over the clutter of my days until I decided to take control and simplify my life. Each month I renounced one thing: shopping, elevators, newspapers, cell phones, dinning out, televition, coffee, cursing, chocolate, and multitasking. During the course of the year, I took stock of my life, discover what was really important, and gained a deeper appreciation for the world around me...

So for this terrible month - Dec, I have to renou… Continue

"Each month I renounced one thing: shopping, elevators, newspapers, cell phones, dinning out, televition, coffee, cursing, chocolate, and multitasking" With the exception of elevators and cell phones I had no choice but to give up those things on moving to China- none are accessible to laowai in Longgang, SZ.
Keep it up!

Very noble to give up the material things - surely a foreign concept in SZ - hahaha!! Good luck, although am sure luck has nothing to do with it.

Cheers!

Hi Viv !

So it was a change to take juice instead of alcohol?! A good way to start the new year ; ) .

Its more dangerous then if you still need to drive a car after drinking. You can sleep, but only after driving. ... As always, I find my bed.. the right bed, the right apartment, the right door.. It isn't hard esp if my aprtment is always the choice.. : )

Hv a nice year ahead !! Let's drink to that !! :)

Hi Viv !

It was perfectly fine to read it..

I just wonder how many drinks u can take that makes u still standing. : )

I hope u that whenever u drink that u always leave a little sanity to enable you to know where your apartment door is.

Let me know if you are interested to finish my bottle of wine.

Cheers !!

Hi Habiba
You have posted some very nice pictures and some intruiging writing - lots of talent. How do you not do shopping for one month ?
Surprisingly though Shenzhen is a real big city there is still lots of nature to observe. In fact I used to watch eagles in Shekou, one even caught some prey off a street nearby the NanShan. Since moving back to Germany I really miss the warm Shenzhen weather and the friendliness of most people.
Cheers
Paul
